Many scholarships now open for applications

By Claudia Garcia

The Sauk Valley Community College foundation wants students to apply for recently opened scholarships on campus.

Many scholarships are only available to SVCC students so there is little competition compared to other scholarships.  As a result, the chance of receiving a scholarship is higher.

The scholarships are awarded for a variety of reasons such as GPA, the field of study, or even your hometown. There are certain requirements that scholarships require you to meet before applying, but if you take the time to look, you are bound to find a scholarship or two that you can apply for!

Academic advisor Sasha Logan mentioned “As an advisor, I believe that paying attention to scholarship opportunities and applying to as many as possible is important to set yourself up for future financial success. There are many scholarship opportunities available to reduce your school debt load, and the time and effort needed to search and apply for scholarships can save you thousands of dollars and years of payments in the future.”

Additionally, there are also hundreds of scholarships available outside of Sauk. Financial Assistance Advisor Rebecca Flynn created a scholarship board that can be found at https://www.svcc.edu/students/finaid/available/scholarships/external/index.html. This link directs Students to a variety of scholarships such as local and national scholarships.

Flynn advised “While the applicant pool for most of these scholarships will be higher than our Foundation scholarships, I still recommend students apply for any scholarships they are eligible for. If you consider that you may spend two hours applying for scholarships, and then are awarded $1000, you just essentially made $500 an hour.”

The scholarships offered by the SVC Foundation scholarships can be found at www.svcc.edu/scholarships.
